How Laser Engraving Works

A laser engraver focuses a beam of light to a point fine enough to vaporize a microscopically thin layer of whatever it lands on. Nothing is added to the surface — material is removed, and what sits underneath becomes the mark. The beam follows a digital file, which is why the design lands at the same size, in the same place, at the same depth on the first piece and on the two-hundredth.

Because no ink, film, or coating is involved, there is nothing about an engraved mark that can fail. It is dishwasher-safe, scratch-resistant, and fade-proof, and it is tactile — run a thumb across an engraved logo and you can feel the edge of it. Color is simply not part of the process, which also means a detailed multi-color logo carries none of the per-color charges printing would add. Engraving trades color for precision and permanence, and that trade is exactly why it has become the standard for executive gifts, recognition awards, and the drinkware a company hands to the clients it most wants to keep.

Materials behave differently under the beam, and the material usually decides how the finished piece will look. Stainless steel produces the classic bright, frosted etch that stands out cleanly on tumblers and bottles. Powder-coated and anodized metals work the other way around — the laser lifts the color layer to reveal the metal beneath, so a black or navy tumbler shows a crisp silver mark. Brass and aluminum accept fine, jewelry-grade detail, which is what makes pens, tags, and small plates work so well. Glass frosts to a soft matte rather than cutting deep, giving stemware and awards an understated, formal finish. Wood — a cutting board, a plaque backer — darkens rather than clears, leaving a warm, burned-in tone.

Nothing is engraved before you have seen a digital proof showing the exact size and placement of your text or logo on the actual item. Engraving reproduces clean lines and solid shapes best, so if all you have is a full-color logo, preparing an engraving-ready version of it is part of the job rather than an extra charge — you will see that version on the proof and can change it before a single piece runs. Where the choice between two finishes is close, we can engrave one sample first, so you are judging the real thing instead of a rendering.

Pricing & Turnaround

Engraving is priced on three things: the item itself, how much area the design covers, and how many pieces you are running. The first is straightforward — a keychain and an insulated bottle are different products at different costs. The second is really a question of machine time, because a compact logo engraves in seconds while a large, intricate design covering most of a tumbler takes considerably longer per piece. The third is where the savings live: setup is a one-time effort spread across the whole run, so the per-piece cost falls steadily as the quantity rises.

We quote every job directly instead of publishing a fixed price table. That is not evasiveness — a table has to assume a worst case in order to be safe, and quoting your actual item, artwork, and quantity almost always lands lower than a generic figure would. There is no minimum order, so a single engraved gift is a perfectly normal order here. It is still worth telling us the largest quantity you might realistically need, because the per-piece price improves enough with volume that covering a whole team, a full event, or a season of client gifts often costs less per piece than you would expect — and keeping a few spares on the shelf costs very little once the run is already set up.

Most engraved orders are ready in about 5 to 10 business days after you approve your proof, and smaller orders frequently move faster.
