DTF, Sublimation, or Screen Print: How Custom Jerseys Are Made

Team jerseys are printed differently than a normal T-shirt, and choosing the right method is the difference between a jersey that looks sharp all season and one that cracks and fades by October. We run all three methods in-house and will tell you plainly which fits your team, your budget, and your timeline.

DTF (direct-to-film) transfer is the right call for most rec-league orders. Your logo, team name, and each player's number are printed onto a film and heat-pressed onto a blank athletic-mesh jersey in any color you supply. It holds fine detail and multiple colors at no extra cost per color, works on the moisture-wicking mesh fabric jerseys are actually made from, and survives a full season of washing and practice. There is no minimum, so replacing one player's jersey mid-season costs the same setup as the original order.

Dye-sublimation is the premium option, and the only one that dyes the fabric itself rather than printing on top of it — the ink becomes part of the polyester, so there's no layer to crack, peel, or feel stiff against the skin. It's what full uniform manufacturers use for all-over-color jerseys with the design woven through the whole shirt, not just a chest logo. It runs most efficiently on a full team order, since the blank jerseys are produced to the design rather than printed after the fact.

Screen printing still wins on pure per-piece cost at real volume — 24 or more identical jerseys with the same one- or two-color design, like a house-league team that keeps things simple. Past two or three colors, the setup cost per screen adds up fast, which is where DTF usually overtakes it for anything with real detail.

What We Can Print on a Jersey

A jersey order is rarely just one design. Between the front, the back, sleeves, and a full roster of names and numbers, here's what we handle on every team order:

• Team logo and name — front and/or back, in your team's exact colors, matched from a logo file, a photo of an old jersey, or a rough sketch.
• Player numbers — each jersey individually numbered, front or back or both, in a consistent font and size across the whole roster.
• Player names — above the number, spelled exactly as each family submits it, which is why we send a roster form instead of guessing from a group chat.
• Sponsor logos — many rec leagues require a local sponsor's name or logo on the jersey; we place it wherever your league's rules require.
• Captain marks, alternate colors, and goalkeeper jerseys — the small variations a real roster needs, handled as part of the same order rather than a separate job.

Jersey pricing depends on the printing method, the number of colors, and how many jerseys you need — a single replacement jersey is priced differently than an 18-player roster with individual names and numbers. As a general rule: DTF pricing scales gently with roster size and holds steady no matter how many colors your logo uses. Sublimation is priced most efficiently on a full team order rather than a single jersey, since the blank garments themselves are produced to your design. Screen printing gets cheaper per piece as the identical-design quantity climbs past two dozen, but adds cost for each additional color.
