What Is Screen Printing?

Screen printing is the oldest and most-established method of applying a custom design to fabric. Ink is pushed through a fine mesh screen — one screen per color — directly onto the garment. How the Screen Printing Process Works

Your design is first separated into individual colors — one screen is prepared for each color, with the design "burned" into a light-sensitive emulsion coating the screen. For a 3-color logo, we prepare 3 screens.

At the press, each garment is loaded onto a platen and the screens are aligned in sequence. A squeegee pulls ink through the screen mesh, depositing a precise layer of ink onto the shirt. Each color goes down in turn, and between colors the shirt passes under a flash-cure unit to set the ink briefly so the next color doesn't smudge.

After all colors are printed, the shirt travels through a conveyor dryer at around 320°F to fully cure the ink into the fabric fibers. The result is a print that will outlast the shirt itself — properly-cured plastisol survives 100+ wash cycles without noticeable fading.

Screen Printing vs DTF

DTF (direct-to-film) transfers apply a printed film to any garment via heat press. DTF wins on quantities under 40–50 pieces (no setup fee, no color-count surcharge), on mixed-garment orders spanning different fabrics, and on complex multi-color or photographic art.

Screen printing wins everywhere else. Above 25–50 pieces of the same design on the same garment, screen printing's per-shirt price drops well below DTF and keeps dropping. On simple 1-4 color designs at any volume above 12 pieces, screen printing is usually cheaper. On long-term wash durability (100+ cycles), screen printing outperforms every other method — the ink layer sits deep in the fabric, not on top of it. For team uniforms, corporate apparel that needs to last for years, and any high-volume repeating order, screen printing is the standard.

Screen Printing vs DTG

DTG (direct-to-garment) prints ink directly into the fibers of a shirt, producing a soft, natural feel — closer to the fabric itself. DTG wins on single-piece and small orders (1–15 pieces), full-color or photographic art on cotton light-colored garments, and rush turnaround where screen setup would be a bottleneck.

Screen printing wins on quantity (25+ pieces of the same design) and per-shirt cost at higher volumes. It also wins on color intensity — DTG's colors are dyed into cotton fibers and can look slightly muted next to screen printing's opaque ink layer on top. For any order profile above about 20 pieces of the same design, screen printing is almost always cheaper per shirt.

Screen Printing vs Embroidery

Embroidery stitches your logo into the garment with thread rather than printing ink onto it. Embroidery wins on structured garments (polos, jackets, caps, fleece), on high-friction wear that would abrade a print, and on the premium look that corporate uniforms and hospitality apparel typically call for.

Screen printing wins on t-shirts, hoodies, athletic wear, and larger design sizes where embroidery would use too many stitches (or too much time). For a full-front or full-back design larger than about 6 inches, screen printing is faster and cheaper than embroidery — usually dramatically so.

After approval, we prepare one screen per color in your design. Screens are burned overnight (typically 6–12 hours to prep, coat, and cure). Production runs the next day: each garment loads onto the press, each color prints in sequence, and shirts cure on the conveyor dryer.

Screens are stored on file for 6 months on the assumption you'll reorder — most customers do, and reorders skip the screen-prep step and the associated fee.
