How it works

What Is Screen Printing?

Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh screen onto the garment — one screen per color, each color printed in sequence. The result is a thick, opaque ink layer that sits on top of the fabric with exceptional color intensity and durability. It is the oldest and most proven method in the custom apparel industry, and it remains the best choice for large runs of the same design in 1–6 spot colors.

How the Screen Printing Process Works

Artwork is separated by color and each color is burned onto its own mesh screen — a process called film output and screen exposure. Screens are coated with light-sensitive emulsion, exposed under UV light, and washed out to create the stencil. Each screen is then loaded onto the press in registration with the others.

The garment loads onto the press platen. A squeegee pulls ink across the screen, pushing it through the open mesh onto the fabric. Each color prints in sequence; the garment moves to the next head for the next color. After printing, shirts travel through a conveyor dryer at 320°F to cure the plastisol ink permanently into the fabric. Cured correctly, the ink outlasts the shirt.

Screen Setup & Production

After approval, we prepare one screen per color in your design. Screens are burned overnight (typically 6–12 hours to prep, coat, and cure). Production runs the next day: each garment loads onto the press, each color prints in sequence, and shirts cure on the conveyor dryer.

Screens are stored on file for 6 months on the assumption you'll reorder — most customers do, and reorders skip the screen-prep step and the associated fee.
